Floods ravage Nigeria, killing 179 and displacing thousands

At least 179 people have died, and around 200,000 have been displaced due to severe floods following intense rainfall in parts of Nigeria, according to an emergency official on Thursday.

The worst flooding has been in northern Nigeria, with over 107,600 hectares of farmland affected, as reported by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Most deaths occurred in the north, but central and southern Nigeria might face worsening conditions as rains intensify, warned NEMA spokesman Ezekiel Manzo.

Manzo highlighted that communities along the Niger and Benue rivers are at higher risk, with floods now impacting areas previously unaffected by such disasters.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assured that authorities will issue warnings to mitigate environmental impacts, while emergency officials are working to prevent further devastation.
