Former general tied to Jammeh regime arrested in Gambia

The Gambian military announced the arrest of former general Bora Colley, accused of being part of a death squad during ex-dictator Yahya Jammeh’s regime.

This squad allegedly conducted extrajudicial killings.

Colley, a former brigadier general, was part of the “Junglers,” a paramilitary group notorious for alleged torture and unlawful executions, according to the United Nations and human rights organizations.

The Gambia Armed Forces stated Colley surrendered to the Military Police at Yundum Barracks near Banjul on August 9, 2024, around midnight. Intelligence operations had monitored his Banjul residence.

Currently detained, Colley is reportedly cooperating with military investigations.

His arrest is part of a broader effort to address past abuses during Jammeh’s rule.

In 2022, the Gambian government agreed to prosecute 70 individuals, including Jammeh, following a commission’s findings on his regime’s atrocities.

Jammeh fled to Equatorial Guinea in 2017 after losing power.
