Gunmen abduct at least 20 students in north-central Nigeria

At least 20 students were kidnapped by gunmen while traveling for a convention in Nigeria’s north-central state of Benue, police reported on Friday. This incident adds to the ongoing wave of abductions across Africa’s most populous nation.

Armed gangs have been wreaking havoc in northern Nigeria, abducting villagers, students, and motorists for ransom, with security forces struggling to bring the situation under control.

According to Benue police spokesperson Catherine Anene, the kidnapping took place on Thursday, and authorities have launched an investigation.

The abducted students, who were studying medicine and dentistry, were on their way to the southeastern state of Enugu when the attack occurred.
