Gunmen fatally shoot 4 soldiers, abduct 2 Koreans in Nigeria

Gunmen in Nigeria’s southern region have attacked a convoy, resulting in the tragic deaths of four soldiers, two civilian drivers, and the abduction of two Korean workers, as confirmed by the police on Wednesday.

The abduction of foreign workers, often for ransom, is a recurring issue in Nigeria, particularly targeting those engaged in remote mining or construction endeavors.

The recent incident occurred early Tuesday along the Ahoada/Abua East-West axis in southern Rivers State, according to local law enforcement.

“The attackers ambushed a convoy of vehicles conveying two Daewoo workers around 9:30am. Four soldiers escorting the Koreans and their two civilian drivers were killed in the attack,” a senior police officer in the state told media.

“The gunmen also abducted the two Koreans before fleeing the scene,” said the officer, who did not want to be named.

Both the military and the South Korean company Daewoo were unavailable for immediate comment regarding the assault.

Numerous Asian companies, including those from China and South Korea, are actively involved in Nigeria’s infrastructure development, particularly road and railway construction projects.

Unfortunately, such workers have previously fallen victim to kidnappings for ransom, typically being released upon payment to their captors.
