Gunmen kill 10 and burn homes in southeastern Nigeria attack

Gunmen stormed the Amegu Nkalaha community in southeastern Nigeria, killing 10 people and forcing many to flee.

The assailants, suspected to be members of the separatist group IPOB, left a trail of destruction, setting homes ablaze and reducing properties to rubble.

Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu confirmed the attack, stating that security forces were deployed to the area after receiving reports of the violence.

“Several houses were also burned selectively in the area, and other properties destroyed,” Ukandu told Anadolu in a brief statement.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the assault, while security reinforcements have restored a fragile sense of calm to the community.

Southeastern Nigeria has been plagued by relentless waves of violence, with armed groups launching frequent attacks and deepening tensions.

The region also grapples with violent clashes between herders and farmers, driven by disputes over land, grazing routes, and food security.

Despite repeated calls for a national ranching system, killings and farmland destruction continue to sow chaos in rural communities.

Residents remain on edge, fearing further bloodshed as security forces work to prevent future attacks.
