Guterres, Blinken discuss aid for Haiti, Africa security

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a phone call Friday to discuss security concerns in Haiti, Somalia, and Yemen.

Blinken emphasized the progress of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti and supported transitioning it to a UN peacekeeping operation for sustainable security.

cHaiti faces ongoing gang violence, intensified after President Jovenel Moise’s assassination in 2021.

They also reviewed funding for Somalia’s African Union Support Mission (AUSSOM) amid continued threats from al-Shabaab.

The leaders discussed steps to secure the release of UN and NGO staff detained by Houthis in Yemen.

Blinken thanked Guterres for his leadership in these critical international issues.
