Head of Libya’s national oil corporation steps down – report

The head of Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) has departed from his role, sources revealed.

NOC is the backbone of Libya’s oil production, overseeing technical operations and managing smaller subsidiaries in the OPEC nation.

Libya, the third-largest oil producer in North Africa, has struggled with disrupted production since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Frequent facility blockades, driven by material demands or political motives, have repeatedly impacted the nation’s oil output.

Farhat Bengdara, who assumed the NOC leadership in July 2022, has left under undisclosed circumstances, two sources confirmed.

Efforts to reach Bengdara for comments were unsuccessful, leaving the reasons for his departure unclear.

The Government of National Unity (GNU) swiftly appointed Masoud Sulaiman as interim NOC chief until a formal board is established.

GNU head Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah’s decision comes amid global shifts in oil markets and Yemen’s Houthi militia’s truce on maritime attacks.
