The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and Somalia signed an agreement on Monday to establish a regional center focused on the blue economy.
The agreement was formalized in Mogadishu, marking a significant step towards regional development.
IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyeh was present for the signing.
“This agreement to create a Regional Centre of Excellence in Blue Economy represents a transformative milestone for both Somalia and the region,” said IGAD in a statement on X.
Following the signing, Gebeyeh met with Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi.
They discussed enhancing regional peace, security, and the IGAD-Somalia partnership.
IGAD praised Somalia’s efforts to strengthen regional integration and contribute to peace initiatives, including those in Sudan.
The blue economy focuses on the sustainable use of ocean resources to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve livelihoods while preserving ocean ecosystems.
