Seven artisanal miners were killed when a disused gold shaft collapsed in Bindura, Zimbabwe, on Saturday.
Police issued a statement warning against the dangers of illegal mining activities, which are prevalent in the country due to economic hardship.
The collapse occurred in Bindura, located approximately 85 kilometers north of the capital, Harare.
Five of the deceased miners have been identified, with their ages ranging from 20 to 34 years old.
Police investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the collapse.
This tragic incident highlights the significant risks associated with illegal mining activities, particularly in areas with unstable ground conditions, such as those affected by recent heavy rains.
This incident comes on the heels of a similar tragedy in neighboring South Africa, where 87 bodies were recovered from an illegal mine, involving over 400 Zimbabwean miners.
The Zimbabwean government has repeatedly warned against the dangers of illegal mining, but the lure of quick profits continues to draw many into these hazardous activities.
