Infantino faces questions over African fans’ safety in America

African media recently questioned FIFA President Gianni Infantino about the safety and welcome of African fans at the 2026 World Cup in the United States. During a press conference in Kenya, reporters expressed that African soccer fans were “a little bit jittery” about current events in the U.S. and raised concerns about fans feeling like “second-class citizens” during the tournament.

A South African reporter directly addressed Infantino, saying that fans from Africa “do not feel welcome” in the United States.

This concern was voiced in light of U.S. travel bans and watchlists that could affect dozens of countries, including Iran, which has already qualified. In response, Infantino stated that “everyone will be welcome in North America” and insisted that there was a “lot of misconception out there” regarding the issue.

He pointed to the recent Club World Cup in the U.S., claiming fans from 164 countries attended “without… any problems” with visas. The press conference also touched on Infantino’s long-standing relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump, noting his recent visit to the White House.

Infantino was reminded of the tense diplomatic climate, including a recent visit by South Africa’s president to the White House. Patrice Motsepe, a FIFA vice president and brother-in-law of South Africa’s president, was also present.

He assured the media that discreet work with U.S. authorities had secured commitments to ensure the World Cup would run smoothly and that there would be “sufficient access to African fans.” At least nine African nations are expected to be among the 48 teams competing in the 2026 World Cup.

A tenth team could also advance from inter-continental playoffs. The tournament is scheduled to be held from June 11 to July 19 in 11 U.S. cities, three in Mexico, and two in Canada.

Tickets for the 104 matches will go on sale on September 10, with the tournament draw scheduled for December 5 at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
