Jacob Zuma’s ANC membership at risk after leading rival party

The ANC’s disciplinary committee in South Africa has reportedly decided to expel former president Jacob Zuma for leading a rival faction in the May elections, according to a leaked document from July 29.

This decision follows recent disciplinary proceedings against Zuma.

The leaked document reveals that Zuma, who remains popular, has been expelled from the ANC.

It also states that he has the right to appeal the decision to the National Disciplinary Committee within 21 days.

Earlier this year, the ANC suspended Zuma after he supported the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), which impacted the ANC’s vote share in the May 29 elections.

MK finished third with 14.5 percent of the vote.

The ANC achieved its lowest electoral performance in three decades with 40 percent of the vote, a significant decline from its previous dominance.

If Zuma’s appeal fails, his ANC membership could be permanently terminated.

Zuma, a long-time ANC member since age 15, was president from 2009 until his 2018 resignation amid corruption allegations.

Despite his prison term in 2021 and a damning 2022 report on corruption, he remains influential in South African politics.
