Nomceba Zuma, daughter of South Africa’s ex-president Jacob Zuma, danced for Eswatini’s king at a traditional ceremony on Monday.
This event confirmed her engagement to the monarch.
Nomceba, 21, joined 5,000 participants at the Reed Dance in Ludzidzini Royal Village, near Mbabane.
The ceremony is a key rite of womanhood in Eswatini.
King Mswati III, 56, uses the Reed Dance to select a new wife. He already has at least 14 wives and 25 children, with some marriages occurring when the brides were minors.
Nomceba was designated as the “liphovela,” the royal fiancée, according to Mswati’s brother.
At the evening ceremony, she danced with others in traditional attire before the king.
Jacob Zuma, 82, also polygamous with over 20 children, resigned from South Africa’s presidency in 2018 amid corruption allegations.
Mswati, ruling since 1986, faces criticism for his wealth while many Eswatini citizens live in poverty.
