Paul Kagame won a fourth term in office, securing over 99% of the vote in Rwanda’s recent presidential elections.
The National Electoral Commission provided these partial results.
Kagame, representing the ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), competed against Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana in the July 15 election.
Habineza and Mpayimana both congratulated Kagame after collectively receiving less than 1% of the vote, with 0.53% and 0.32% respectively.
Provisional results will be released this week, and final results are due on July 27.
The National Electoral Commission reported a 98% voter turnout among the 9.5 million eligible voters.
Kagame’s win extends his long tenure as Rwanda’s leader, maintaining his control since the post-genocide period.
Kagame, now 66, claims he runs at the request of the ruling party and Rwandan citizens.
He states he could retire comfortably but continues to lead due to popular demand.
