Kagame urges Congo to talk to M23 after territorial gains

President Paul Kagame has called on Congo to negotiate with the M23 rebels, who recently seized key towns in eastern Congo. The M23 group has expanded its control, displacing thousands in the volatile region.

Kagame emphasized that refusing dialogue with M23 prevents finding a political solution. “There has to be an effort to continue finding a solution,” he said in Kigali, stressing the need for peace talks.

Congo has accused Rwanda of supporting M23 and rejected calls for negotiations. Tensions are compounded by the presence of another rebel group, the FDLR, allegedly backed by Congo’s army, which Rwanda claims threatens its security.

M23, which revived its insurgency in 2021, has captured significant territory in eastern Congo, worsening the humanitarian crisis. Despite claiming to protect civilians, the group’s actions continue to cause widespread fear and displacement. Kagame’s call highlights the urgency for peace in the region.
