Kenya civil commission calls Ruto ‘liar’ over police abductions

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has strongly criticized President William Ruto for denying knowledge of police abductions during recent protests.

KHRC labeled his comments as a “blatant lie.”

According to KHRC, over 22 people have been abducted and 53 arbitrarily arrested, including professionals like doctors and lawyers.

Many others are in hiding due to police threats, the commission stated.

On International Day of the Disappeared, KHRC condemned Ruto’s denial of knowledge regarding enforced disappearances under his administration.

They called for accountability and immediate action to address these abuses.

During a town hall session, Ruto claimed ignorance about any abductions, despite numerous reports of individuals being taken by suspected police officers since June.

He urged families of the missing to come forward.

KHRC demanded an independent investigation into these forced disappearances and highlighted the suffering of affected families.

The protests, triggered by tax increases in the Finance Bill 2024, led to 50 deaths and significant property damage.
