In a significant diplomatic development, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Kenyan President William Ruto met on Wednesday to underscore their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and fortifying regional security and stability. Ahmed’s visit to the capital city Nairobi, which commenced on Tuesday, marked his inaugural trip since Ruto assumed office in September 2022.
During their deliberations, the leaders emphasized their enduring bilateral friendship, articulating a shared commitment to revitalizing collaboration across various sectors. A joint statement issued after their talks highlighted their determination to enhance cooperation in trade, agriculture, and infrastructure development.
Recognizing the interdependence of regional stability and prosperity, Ahmed and Ruto reiterated their steadfast dedication to preserving peace and security in the Horn of Africa. The leaders stressed the significance of upholding territorial integrity, refraining from interference in internal political affairs, and adhering to democratic principles, thereby endorsing peaceful power transitions.
In a joint affirmation, Ahmed and Ruto expressed their commitment “to recognize, respect, and uphold the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, and to reject unconstitutional changes of government as well as interference in domestic political processes of African Countries by external interests.”
An additional focal point of concern in the region surfaced when, in November of the previous year, landlocked Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland reached an agreement facilitating Ethiopia’s access to the Red Sea. The resulting tension, particularly with Somalia, which claims Somaliland as part of its territory, has escalated, with the port deal viewed as an infringement on Somalia’s sovereignty and a threat to its territorial integrity.
On the global stage, Ruto and Abiy advocated for stronger multilateral partnerships and called for UN reform. Their shared vision entails a more representative, accountable, and responsive global governance system capable of effectively addressing contemporary challenges faced by the world. This diplomatic collaboration aims to contribute to a more stable and secure international order.
