Kenya parliament on fire amid deadly tax protests

Sections of parliament caught fire Tuesday when protesters stormed the compound where lawmakers had passed a controversial bill introducing new taxes, a Reuters witness reported.

According to Reuters news agency witness, at least five protester corpses were outside the parliament.

Hundreds of protesters overwhelmed police barriers outside parliament in Nairobi, according to witnesses.

Police fired live rounds to disperse the crowds, Amnesty International Kenya said, leading to numerous injuries.

The protesters were reacting to the introduction of a series of new taxes that had just been approved by the parliamentarians.

Amnesty International condemned the police response, which left many protesters wounded.
