Kenya promises independent probes over female corpses

Kenyan authorities are under intense scrutiny following the discovery of eight mutilated female bodies dumped in a garbage site in Nairobi.

The grim discovery has sparked outrage and renewed criticism of the police force.

Acting national police chief Douglas Kanja pledged a “transparent” investigation into the killings, which has left the nation horrified.

The bodies were found in plastic bags within an abandoned quarry in Mukuru, a slum area in the south of the capital.

The remains were reportedly in various stages of decomposition, suggesting they may have been dumped over a period of time.

Kanja confirmed that all the victims were female and revealed the police are exploring several possibilities, including cult activity, a serial killer, or rogue medical practitioners.

This investigation comes amidst ongoing pressure on President William Ruto’s administration, which has been grappling with the aftermath of deadly anti-government protests last month.

In a bid to restore public trust, Kanja announced the transfer of all officers stationed at the police post near the dumpsite.

He further assured the public of a swift investigation, aiming for completion within 21 days.

However, the lack of prior action and the proximity of the bodies to a police station raise concerns about potential police involvement, which is being investigated by the Independent Police Oversight Authority.
