In response to overcrowding in Kenya’s Mwea National Reserve, 50 elephants are being moved to the more spacious Aberdare National Park. The relocation follows reports of elephants straying into nearby villages, damaging crops and local infrastructure. Mwea Reserve, which has a capacity for about 50 elephants, currently hosts over 150, prompting the need for action.
Wildlife experts are tranquilizing and transporting the elephants by truck in a two-week operation. The elephants will be tracked via GPS collars to ensure they adapt well to their new home.
Local residents, like Pauline Njue, expressed relief, as the elephants’ presence had posed risks to both property and safety. Kenya Wildlife Service officials highlighted that the move will help balance the ecosystem, allowing other species to flourish while reducing environmental strain caused by the elephants.
The relocation is expected to conclude by Wednesday.
