Kenyan agency denies hiring acquitted TV anchor

The Kenyan agency responsible for public appointments has rebutted assertions suggesting the employment of a renowned former TV anchor recently absolved of murder charges.

Public Service Minister Moses Kuria had conveyed to the Nation news website over the weekend that the Public Service Commission (PSC) had designated ex-TV anchor Jacque Maribe as the head of communications within his ministry.

This announcement sparked considerable backlash on social media, with concerns raised regarding the legitimacy of Maribe’s appointment process.

However, the PSC disavowed Mr. Kuria’s statement on Thursday, asserting that neither Maribe had been appointed nor had there been any request for her employment.

PSC Chairperson Anthony Muchiri clarified in a statement disseminated via social media that, “For the record, the said position will be filled through a competitive process should a vacancy arise.”

Maribe was acquitted last month of the murder charges related to businesswoman Monica Kimani following a high-profile six-year trial that captivated the nation. She and her former fiancĂ© Joseph Irungu, also known as “Jowie,” had been implicated in the murder of Kimani, who was discovered with her throat slit at her Nairobi apartment in 2018.

Irungu was subsequently sentenced to death on Wednesday after being found guilty of the murder.
