In a recent development, a Kenyan court has halted the government’s plans to send police officers to lead a U.N.-approved mission in Haiti to address escalating gang violence.
The court ruled in response to an opposition party’s challenge, stating that Kenya can only deploy officers abroad if a reciprocal arrangement with the host government is in place.
This decision comes amid a crisis in Haiti, where gangs have displaced around 200,000 people from their homes. High Court Judge Chacha Mwita declared any further actions in defiance of this ruling as unconstitutional and invalid.
