Kenyan police nearing arrests in case of UK soldier’s death

Kenyan authorities are collaborating with the UK government to probe the killing of a British soldier during an attempted robbery last week.

According to a senior investigating officer speaking anonymously to the BBC, joint efforts between British and Kenyan investigators have included visiting the crime scene just outside Nairobi.

The investigative team is reportedly on the brink of making arrests, the officer stated.

The incident involved Maj Kevin McCool, who was targeted by a group of assailants while on a motorcycle trip off-base. The attack occurred at Vet Farm, a popular hiking destination approximately 25 km (16 miles) from Nairobi.

During the encounter, the assailants demanded money and his phone, eventually drawing a gun, as reported by the officer.

Maj McCool’s father, as previously stated to the PA news agency, noted that his son mistook the gun for a replica.

Eyewitnesses informed the police that the soldier was swiftly taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps expressed condolences, describing Maj McCool’s death as a “tragic loss.”

The British army maintains a permanent base north of Nairobi for training its forces.
