Kenyan President William Ruto appointed his foreign minister as “acting cabinet secretary” for all ministries on Wednesday, nearly a week after dismissing most of his cabinet to quell deadly anti-government rallies.
The nation faced turmoil after peaceful protests against steep tax increases turned violent last month, resulting in dozens of deaths and presenting Ruto with the most significant crisis of his presidency.
To manage the crisis, Ruto took several steps, including scrapping the finance bill with the tax hikes, announcing government cuts, and dismissing nearly his entire cabinet last week.
“Musalia Mudavadi is assigned as the Acting Cabinet Secretary in all vacant Ministerial Portfolios,” stated a government Gazette Notice dated July 12, signed by the president, and released Wednesday.
Mudavadi, the prime cabinet secretary and foreign minister, survived the July 11 cabinet purge along with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, despite the widespread dismissals.Kenyan president designates foreign minister as acting cabinet chief
