Kenyan authorities have detained a woman accused of hurling her eight-month-old baby into the Indian Ocean on Sunday.
Witnesses reported to local media that the woman purportedly tossed the infant from a ferry as it was nearing the dock in the coastal town of Mombasa.
A video capturing divers rescuing the baby has circulated widely on social media, provoking widespread anger towards the woman and relief over the baby’s rescue.
“[She] was rushed for first aid at the Red Cross Centre, treated and discharged in fair condition and her mother taken to the police station for interrogation,” privately-owned K24 and Citizen TV have both reported, citing the police report of the incident.
Earlier, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed that the infant was safe in their rescue center.
The pending charges against the woman remain unclear at this time.
