Kenya’s deputy president defends himself amid impeachment

Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is facing an impeachment motion amid serious allegations.

He is accused of supporting anti-government protests in June and involvement in corruption.

In a televised speech on Monday, Gachagua addressed the allegations for the first time.

He labeled the motion’s author as a liar and described the claims as “shameful and sensational.”

The deputy president confirmed he would appear before Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

He stated he would “prosecute my defense for two hours” regarding the accusations against him.

Tensions were evident last Friday as supporters and opponents of Gachagua clashed during public forums.

These forums were aimed at gathering citizen input on the impeachment motion.

Gachagua defended his wealth, asserting that some properties listed in the motion belonged to his late brother.

He also justified renovation expenses for his official residence, claiming it needed to be “dignified” due to disrepair.

On Sunday, during a prayer meeting at his residence, Gachagua urged forgiveness from President William Ruto, legislators, and the public.

He asked for understanding for any wrongdoing during his tenure.
