Kenyan President William Ruto on Monday accused the US-based Ford Foundation of sponsoring “anarchy” and funding anti-government protests that led to deadly chaos last month.
He criticized the organization during an event in Nakuru.
The political chaos in Kenya stems from demonstrations initially led by Gen-Z Kenyans against proposed tax hikes.
These peaceful rallies have now spiraled into a broader campaign against President Ruto and his administration.
Since the protests began a month ago, dozens have died, with the deadliest day on June 25 when crowds stormed parliament, prompting police to fire live bullets.
The unrest marks a significant crisis in Ruto’s presidency.
Ruto condemned those funding the chaos, saying they are sponsoring violence against Kenya’s democracy.
He specifically called out the Ford Foundation, questioning how they benefit from funding the unrest.
Neither the Ford Foundation’s East Africa office in Nairobi nor the US embassy responded to requests for comment.
The foundation, established in 1936, aims to advance social justice and promote democratic values worldwide.
