Kosovo has reported its first case of monkeypox (mpox) after a 30-year-old man returning from West Africa was diagnosed, health officials announced on Friday.
The patient was hospitalized on December 24 with symptoms including fever, chills, and skin changes on his face and hands, according to Kosovo’s Institute of Public Health. While the exact country of origin was not disclosed, officials noted that the man’s condition is stable.
Authorities have traced individuals who had contact with the patient and have implemented preventive measures to contain the spread.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently reiterated that the mpox outbreak remains a global public health emergency, particularly following its spread from the heavily affected Democratic Republic of Congo to neighboring nations earlier this year.
Monkeypox is a typically mild viral infection characterized by fever, headaches, and skin lesions.
