Libya completes municipal vote phase under UN praise

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya praised the country on Sunday for completing the third phase of municipal elections smoothly.

UNSMIL said the vote unfolded in a calm, orderly atmosphere, with turnout estimated at 69 percent, citing election authorities.

The mission commended local officials, security forces, and observers for ensuring voter safety and orderly polling across municipalities.

It stressed the need to respect electoral integrity and resolve disputes through established legal mechanisms to protect public trust.

UNSMIL reaffirmed its support for Libyan-led efforts to build inclusive, credible, and transparent electoral processes nationwide.

Voters cast ballots on Saturday in cities including Tripoli-adjacent areas, Benghazi, Sirte, Sebha, Tobruk, and several eastern towns.

The third phase marked another step in a staggered electoral roadmap aimed at restoring local governance across the country.

Libya held the first phase of municipal elections in November 2024, covering 58 of the nation’s 143 municipalities.

The second phase followed in August, reflecting gradual but persistent momentum toward broader civic participation.

Election officials said 922 candidates, including 284 women, competed for 87 council seats across nine municipalities.

Beyond local councils, Libyans hope parliamentary and presidential elections can finally end years of political deadlock.

The country remains divided between rival governments in Tripoli and Benghazi, a split that has endured since early 2022.
