Libya’s Internal Security Agency announced it had prevented an attempt to smuggle 100 kg of gold and €1.5 million through Misrata International Airport during a security check on an international flight.
According to the agency’s statement on its verified Facebook page, the gold was discovered in three suitcases, while the cash was found in a separate suitcase. The smuggling attempt was intercepted during the inspection of a flight bound for Turkey.
Photos released by the agency showed gold bars and bundles of euros inside the confiscated luggage. The individuals responsible for the smuggling were arrested.
This incident follows a similar case in May, when officials at Misrata airport were arrested for allegedly conspiring to smuggle 26,000 kg of gold. Libya, divided between rival factions since 2014, has faced ongoing instability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising.
