A senior UN official for Libya described the recent municipal elections as a signal of strong demand for political representation. Hanna Tetteh told the Security Council that a 71% voter turnout shows the Libyan people are yearning for stability.
She also praised Libya’s High National Elections Commission and security officials for making the elections possible despite significant challenges. Tetteh outlined a new roadmap built on three key pillars, including a unified government and a new electoral framework.
The UN official warned the Security Council that the security situation in the country remains volatile, with increasing militarization of all sides. She further stressed that the Libyan people look to the Council for assistance to find a solution to the ongoing crisis.
Libya remains tragically divided between two rival administrations, one controlling the west and the other governing the east. Tetteh stressed that the Council’s ability to act with one voice will be a powerful message that resonates across Libya.
