Mali’s government announced the death of Fahad Ag Almahmoud, a senior Tuareg rebel leader, and several others in a drone strike on Tinzaouaten, a northern town near the Algerian border controlled by the Permanent Strategic Framework for the Defence of the People of Azawad (CSP-DPA).
The strike occurred during a gathering of Tuareg factions aiming to consolidate their political and military structures. Chodi Ag, a communications ministry official, confirmed Almahmoud’s death, calling him a “notorious” figure in the CSP alliance.
The 2015 peace accord between separatists and the government fell apart in July, sparking renewed violence. Tinzaouaten, the scene of recent clashes involving Malian soldiers and Wagner mercenaries, remains a hotspot.
Local sources reported multiple civilian casualties from drone strikes since the conflict reignited. However, the Malian army has yet to officially comment on this latest attack.
