The juntas of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger accused Ukraine of supporting rebels in West Africa’s Sahel region in a letter to the U.N. Security Council, as reported by Mali’s foreign ministry.
Mali severed ties with Ukraine after a Ukrainian military intelligence spokesperson commented on July clashes in northern Mali involving Malian forces and Wagner mercenaries.
Niger’s junta followed Mali’s lead, citing solidarity. The countries viewed the comments as proof of Ukraine’s involvement, accusing it of backing international terrorism.
Ukraine denied the claims, calling them baseless.
A Tuareg rebel group, involved in recent fighting, also denied receiving Ukrainian support, further complicating the conflict.
The letter urged the U.N. to address Ukraine’s alleged subversive actions and prevent threats to regional stability.
The text was shared online and circulated among Security Council members.
