The death toll from Ethiopia’s Marburg virus outbreak has climbed to six, according to a statement from the state-run news agency.
Authorities confirmed the outbreak on 14 November, and the initial fatalities were reported only days after the first detection.
Health officials said the virus has infected eleven people, with six dying and five remaining under medical care across treatment centres.
The health ministry added that 349 people who had contact with confirmed cases were placed in isolation for monitoring.
It said 119 individuals completed their surveillance period and were released, while others remain under close observation.
Marburg, belonging to the same viral family as Ebola, causes sudden fever and severe headaches that can quickly escalate into haemorrhaging.
Officials warn that previous African outbreaks have seen fatality rates surpass 80 percent within days of symptom onset.
The government has urged communities to remain vigilant as health workers race to trace contacts and contain the virus’s spread.
Local response teams continue reinforcing surveillance systems to prevent further infections amid rising public concern.
