Rwanda’s Health Minister Sabin Nsanzimana announced Thursday that the Marburg virus outbreak in the country has ended, with no new cases for nearly two weeks.
The outbreak, first detected in late September, prompted a vaccination campaign starting in October.
Nsanzimana confirmed that all patients have been discharged, and there have been no new cases or deaths for a month.
Africa CDC chief Jean Kaseya had previously stated the virus was under control and posed minimal risk of spreading across borders.
Marburg, related to Ebola, has a high fatality rate, but Rwanda’s outbreak saw a much lower mortality rate of 23 percent, with 15 deaths out of 66 cases.
Authorities remain vigilant, continuing to monitor fruit bats for any signs of the virus.
