Mauritius election focuses on cost of living concerns

Mauritius held a parliamentary election on Sunday, with Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and his rivals promising economic relief as the cost of living rises.

Jugnauth’s Alliance Lepep coalition pledged to raise wages, increase pensions, and reduce taxes on essential items, partly funded by a recent UK agreement on the Chagos Islands.

Mauritius, with a population of 1.3 million, thrives on tourism, textiles, and finance, though voters feel little relief from recent economic growth.

The main opposition, led by Navin Ramgoolam, has similar pledges, including free transport, internet, and lower fuel costs.

Polling ended at 1400 GMT, and results are expected Monday.

Music instructor Ivan Mootooveeren called for change, while others highlighted a desire for economic innovation.
