Moroccans rally in Rabat to protest Israel ties and Gaza crisis

Tens of thousands filled the streets of Rabat on Sunday, denouncing the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and urging Morocco to scrap its normalisation deal with Israel.

Waving Palestinian flags and holding placards, demonstrators chanted, “It’s a disgrace, Gaza is under fire,” and “No to normalisation,” as they marched through the capital’s city centre.

The protest was organised by a coalition of civil society groups, including the Islamist movement Al-Adl Wal-Ihssane and various left-wing parties.

The gathering marked a powerful show of solidarity with Palestinians, as the war in Gaza stretches into its 22nd month with no end in sight.

Sparked by a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the war has left over two million Gazans trapped in a cycle of displacement, trauma, and hunger.

Aid agencies warn of rising malnutrition and the collapse of Gaza’s healthcare system, as continued fighting blocks the flow of vital supplies.

“Palestinians are being starved and killed before the eyes of the whole world,” said protester Jamal Behar. “It is our duty to denounce this dramatic, unbearable situation.”

Since Morocco and Israel signed a US-brokered normalisation agreement in 2020, criticism of the pact has grown louder, particularly as images of devastation from Gaza flood global media.

Sunday’s protest was not just a political statement—it was a plea for justice, echoing through Rabat’s streets with urgency and pain.
