Morocco arrests rights defender for social media post

Moroccan police have arrested renowned human rights activist Fouad Abdelmoumni.

The arrest occurred on Wednesday, amid suspicions of reporting a false crime.

Abdelmoumni is also accused of spreading fake news on social media.

A Casablanca prosecutor confirmed that he will remain in custody during the investigation.

His arrest follows claims made during French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit.

Abdelmoumni posted on Facebook that Morocco is pressuring France through migration and espionage.

Macron’s visit aimed to mend strained diplomatic ties between Morocco and France.

Migration issues have historically contributed to tensions between the two nations.

Abdelmoumni’s lawyer, Souad Brahma, criticized the arrest as a violation of expression.

She stated that he was detained for expressing his political views on social media.
