Mozambique election chaos forces border closure S Africa

South Africa has closed the Lebombo Port of Entry with Mozambique following violent unrest sparked by post-election disputes in Mozambique.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) announced Tuesday that it received reports of vehicles being set ablaze on Mozambique’s side of the crossing. Authorities took swift action, prioritizing safety for travelers, traders, and transporters using the bustling route.

“In light of these security incidents and for public safety, the port will remain closed until further notice,” stated BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato. He encouraged all stakeholders to avoid the area and find alternative travel routes.

Mozambique has faced escalating protests since late October, following the declaration of Daniel Chapo, the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front’s candidate, as the presidential election winner. Chapo secured a substantial 71% of the vote, leaving his closest opponent, Venancio Mondlane of the Podemos party, trailing with 20.32%. Mondlane has since called for protests, alleging that the results were manipulated.

As one of the busiest crossings between South Africa and Mozambique, the Lebombo Port closure impacts traders, seasonal workers, and truck drivers. The BMA emphasized that the decision was made to safeguard all individuals connected to the port.

“We advise all travelers to suspend their travel plans through Lebombo and consider alternate routes until stability returns,” Masiapato urged.

In a related development, South African authorities are assisting seven Mozambican officials who sought refuge on the South African side, citing concerns for their safety amidst the unrest.
