Mozambique opposition leader claims victory after exile return

Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane returned from exile Thursday, claiming victory in October’s presidential election.

His arrival sparked deadly clashes, leaving one person dead and several injured as police dispersed thousands of jubilant supporters.

Mondlane, popular among marginalized youth, accused the ruling Frelimo party of election rigging.

Despite violent confrontations, he called for negotiations, saying, “If you want to negotiate… I’m here.”

The unrest highlights Mozambique’s deep political crisis, with analysts urging dialogue to stabilize the nation as tensions escalate ahead of the president’s inauguration.
