Mozambique’s opposition leader, Venancio Mondlane, claimed Monday that he escaped an assassination attempt while in South Africa.
Mondlane, who fled after the disputed October 9 elections, stated in a video that hitmen came to his Johannesburg residence, forcing him to flee through a back door with his family.
He rejects the election results, which declared Frelimo’s Daniel Chapo the winner.
Mondlane insists he won and has called for protests and strikes.
Following the killing of his lawyer and associate on October 19, Mondlane claims he could be the next target.
Protests after the election left 11 people dead, with observers citing serious electoral flaws.
Mondlane has planned a march for Thursday, calling it “the day of Mozambique’s freedom.”
