Namibia awaits results of closely contested elections

Namibia is counting votes after its most competitive elections in decades. Long queues marked Wednesday’s polls, reflecting high voter turnout as citizens chose a new president and parliament.

The ruling SWAPO party, in power since independence in 1990, faces strong challenges from a youthful electorate demanding change. If SWAPO wins, Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah could become Namibia’s first female president.

Analysts suggest SWAPO’s dominance may be at risk, with unemployment, inequality, and corruption fueling discontent. A candidate needs over 50% of votes to avoid a run-off. Results are expected by the weekend.
