According to an official from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), it is estimated that approximately 10,000 individuals are unaccounted for following deadly floods in Libya.
“We can confirm from our independent sources of information that the number of missing people is hitting 10,000 so far,” Tamer Ramadan, the head of the IFRC delegation in Libya, told reporters in Geneva via video link from Tunisia.
Following the bursting of dams in a storm, approximately 25% of the eastern city of Derna in Libya has been devastated by floods. Up to now, over 1,000 bodies have been recovered, as reported by a minister in the administration that governs the eastern region.
Ramadan said: “The death toll is huge and might reach thousands.”
The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is considering initiating an appeal for emergency funding to aid the flood victims in Libya.
“The challenges are ranging between access to basic health facilities for health services, shelter and shelter management, food and non-food items,” Ramadan said.
