Niger junta announces five-year transition to civilian rule

Niger’s military-led government has set a five-year timeline for a return to constitutional rule, starting Wednesday, as outlined in a newly signed transition charter.

The junta, which seized power in a 2023 coup by ousting President Mohamed Bazoum, has aligned itself with other military-led governments in Mali and Burkina Faso. Following the takeover, Niger expelled French and other European forces, seeking support from Russia in its fight against militant groups.

The announced transition period aligns with recommendations from a commission that conducted national consultations in February.
