Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso exit ECOWAS, citing dissatisfaction

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have officially announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), as declared in a joint statement broadcast on Niger’s national television on Sunday.

The decision, communicated by Colonel Amadou Abdramane, spokesperson for the junta in Niger, was framed as a response to the perceived deviation of ECOWAS from its original principles and the spirit of Pan-Africanism after 49 years of membership.

Colonel Abdramane expressed the collective disappointment of the three nations, emphasizing that ECOWAS had not effectively supported them in their ongoing struggle against terrorism and insecurity.

The departure marks a significant shift in regional alliances and raises questions about the future dynamics within the West African geopolitical landscape.
