Niger seizes control of French company Orano’s uranium mine

French nuclear fuels company Orano announced that Niger’s government has assumed control of its Somair uranium mine amid mounting pressure on foreign businesses under the military-led administration in the West African nation.

Orano, which holds a 63% stake in Somair, stated that decisions made during the mine’s board meetings are no longer being enforced. The Nigerien state owns the remaining shares.

“Orano confirms that Nigerien authorities have taken operational control of the company,” the firm said in a statement.
