Gunmen launched a deadly attack on a mining community in central Nigeria’s Plateau state on Monday, leaving over 40 people dead, according to local media reports.
The attack unfolded in the remote village of Zurak, located within the Bashar district of Wase local government area.
Residents reported that heavily armed attackers arrived on motorcycles around 5:00 p.m. and opened fire indiscriminately.
Sahpi’i Sambo, a youth leader from the area, told The Daily Trust publication that the attackers caused immense casualties, killing more than 40 people and injuring several others.
The violence triggered panic, forcing residents to flee to nearby communities for safety.
There has been no official statement from the Nigerian military regarding the incident.
Unfortunately, attacks by armed militants and kidnappings are common occurrences in Nigeria, which also grapples with frequent inter-communal clashes.
The lack of security and ongoing violence pose significant challenges for the country’s stability and development.
