Nigeria extradites Chinese gang leader after global police pursuit

Nigeria has extradited a fugitive Chinese gang leader accused of violent crimes, following a coordinated police operation under Interpol, authorities announced Sunday. The suspect, identified as Dai Qisheng, was captured in Abuja on August 8 during a covert operation involving multiple security agencies.

Police confirmed Dai was transferred to Chinese authorities a week later under a direct police-to-police cooperation framework designed to strengthen transnational law enforcement. Officials said Dai fled China in 2024 to escape an impending arrest in the southwestern province of Guizhou, where he faced serious charges.

Interpol’s coordination allowed Nigerian police to track Dai’s movements, signalling the reach of international policing networks in combating organised crime. The extradition marks a significant example of cross-border security collaboration, showing the determination of both nations to deny fugitives any safe haven.

By swiftly delivering Dai to Chinese custody, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to international justice and cooperation in pursuing transnational criminal figures. Chinese authorities are expected to prosecute Dai under national law, closing a brief but high-profile chapter in the country’s fight against violent gangs.
