Nigeria secures release of 20 kidnapped students

Nigerian police have successfully secured the release of 20 students who were abducted while en route to a convention in Benue State last week, the authorities announced on Saturday via a post on X.

The students, specializing in medical and dental studies, were traveling to Enugu State in southeastern Nigeria when armed assailants seized them.

Kidnapping for ransom has become rampant in northern Nigeria, with armed gangs frequently targeting villagers, students, and motorists, while security forces struggle to contain the situation.

“We can confirm the release on Friday of our brothers, sisters, and other Nigerians who had been held captive in Ntunkon Forest, Benue State,” police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi said.

Adejobi emphasized that no ransom was paid for their release, noting that the victims were “rescued tactically and professionally” by the police.
