Nigeria to automate short-stay visa approvals

Nigeria is set to automate its electronic visa approval and issuance process, aiming to streamline travel and boost business, Interior Minister Olubunmi Ojo announced.

The move is expected to cut down long wait times for travelers and curb the role of middlemen who facilitate visa processing through immigration officials.

Under the new system, visitors applying for short-stay visas will be able to submit applications online, with approvals issued within 24 to 48 hours. Approved e-visas will be sent directly via email, removing the need for physical visa stickers at airports.

“This policy will enhance the ease of doing business, promote tourism, and strengthen Nigeria’s global ties,” Ojo said in a post on X following a departmental meeting on Tuesday.

Since taking office in May 2023, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has prioritized simplifying visa procedures for foreigners and improving passport issuance for Nigerians, including launching a contactless passport application system for citizens abroad.
