Nigeria has uncovered $7.8 million laundered into terrorists’ accounts through a religious sect, as revealed by Ola Olukayode, head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
This discovery emerged during an investigation into the theft of $33.5 million from Nigeria.
Olukayode disclosed the involvement of a religious sect in money laundering for terrorists, with the sect leader obtaining a court order preventing the commission from arresting him and recovering the funds.
Despite a prior letter requesting the leader’s appearance at the commission, he remained elusive.
The revelation follows Nigeria’s currency note redesign in December 2022, driven by security concerns, including reported instances of money laundering into terrorists’ and bandits’ accounts.
